Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Join me for this three-day writing camp! We're going to learn three strong writing techniques that will make your summer days even sunnier!

Day 1 - Magic Threes: A simple way of making your writing more memorable to your readers

Day 2 - Reelin' 'Em In (Hooks): Catching an keeping your readers' attention from the very first words of your paper

Day 3 - AAAWWUBBIS: Developing more complex sentences that will be delightfully engaging for your readers.

The descriptions of each of the three classes are below.
**********************************************************************************************************

MAGIC THREES: HOW THIS, THAT, AND THE OTHER FATTEN SENTENCES AND EXCITE READERS!

Presidents use them in their speeches, famous writers use them in books and great literature, and you can use them anywhere you want to! (BTW - That was a Magic Three.)

Join this class, so that you can:

*    Learn what Magic Threes are;
*    Find out why we want to use them;
*    Explore the Three Types of Magic Threes and how to use them;
*    Read examples from famous speeches and letters, examples from literature, and the fun books we love to read;
*    Practice creating the three types of Magic Threes by pumping up boring sentences freely provided by the teacher;
* ...and laughing...as much as possible!

Students should be fully comfortable with writing complete sentences in order for this class to be beneficial.

REELIN' 'EM IN! (USING IRRESISTIBLE HOOKS TO CATCH AND KEEP YOUR READERS' ATTENTION)

Nobody wants their readers to jump out of the boat before they finish the first sentence. It's way more fun to grab their attention and interest with the perfect Turn-of-Phrase, Unexpected Joke, or Totally Shocking Statement.

Get your fishin' gear together, and let's learn to catch your readers' attention with EIGHT DIFFERENT TYPES OF HOOKS for your Expository and Narrative writing!

In this class:
* We'll learn about Eight Different Types of Hooks and what topics and types of writing they will most compliment and strengthen.
* We'll look at Sample Paragraphs, and see the difference Hooks make when added to them.
* We'll check out some More Sample Paragraphs and Prompts, and students will determine what types of hooks would best suit them.
* Students will Practice Creating Irresistible Hooks based upon those Sample Paragraphs and Prompts.
* Students will get the chance to Share, Discuss, and Laugh their way to Catching Their Readers' Attention and Keeping It!

I look forward to Fishin' with You!

Students should be fully comfortable with writing complete sentences in order for this class to be beneficial.

AAAWWUBBIS: WHEN A COMPLETE SENTENCE SIMPLY ISN'T ENOUGH

Cake is good, but cake with frosting is better. It's the same with the sentences we write. Plain, boring sentences are okay, and they may even get the point across, but are we losing our readers' interest in the process? Check out the example below.

SENTENCE 1: Mom realized that we were out of several ingredients. (Simple Sentence - BORING!)

SENTENCE 2: Mom went to the store and bought everything we needed to bake a cake. (Simple Sentence - BORING!)

AAAWWUBBIFIED SENTENCE: When she realized that we were out of several ingredients, Mom went to the store and bought everything we needed to bake a cake. (Complex Sentence - FAR MORE INTERESTING TO YOUR READER!)

Students should be fully comfortable with writing complete sentences in order for this class to be beneficial.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from LeTourneau University
I've spent several years teaching children to be successful writers, and to be successful on state writing tests. I absolutely love to write and share the joy of writing, and I've taught writing for several years. I understand that writing isn't everyone's cup of tea, so I am beyond happy to share some ways to bring your words to the surface. Oftentimes, it's just a matter of sorting out what's happening in your brain and getting it to come out in the right order. I'm here for you!
