US Grade 7 - 10
Beginner - Advanced Level
This class will focus on the process of writing scripts for cartoons and comic books as well as formulas for crafting a good story that emphasizes the artistic possibilities of visual storytelling arts. The overall structure for this one-time class will be: Part 1: The components of story Part 2: From premise to script - the writing process Part 3: Exploring the visual possibilities Part 4: Student story brainstorm Part 5: Q &A (if there's time) The class will mostly be taught in a lecture format, but I will be frequently calling on learners to ask questions and participate with examples. I like teaching to be a conversation where I ask learners questions and encourage them to ask me questions, and I make it fun and humorous where I can to make the lesson memorable. The main way that learners will interact with me is through any questions they have about the topics I'm teaching or about my animation career, as well as an exercise of them pitching their own unique story ideas to the class in an effort to create a true collaborative storytelling experience.
Learning Goals
The process that goes into writing a full script - starting from a simple logline, to a one page premise, to a 3 page outline, and finally to a full script - and the things that need to be figured out at each step.
The ins and outs of the 3-act structure that all animation writers follow in the industry, which is a simplified version of the mythic structure outlined in Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey.
