Class Experience

Students in the class will be challenged to creatively write a story about an event in history that they are interested in. They will be introduced to research skills including choosing sources that are reliable and documenting their sources. Students will use the writing process to complete their essay.

In the first class: The students will choose a historical event or time period, teacher will bring suggestions and examples. They will be taught the skills they need to do their research, finding reliable resources with factual information, and be responsible to do their research outside of class. This first class will also discuss the first steps of the writing process and how to take notes and document their sources. Homework will be finding 2 sources and writing at least 10 facts on their chosen topic.

In the second class: Students will discuss one of the sources they have found and share 2 things they have found to be a fact. Next we will discuss brainstorming and elements of writing fiction as well as the using their brainstorming to begin a rough draft. There will be a short writing period during class. They will be assigned to complete their rough draft of their historical fiction essay for the next class. I will share examples of enjoyable historical fiction.

In the 3rd class: Students will bring their rough drafts to class. They will be taught how to proofread and edit their essays. Students may be asked to read aloud a portion of their essay.
Students will be taught proper citation of sources. We will talk about illustrations and look at some examples.

In the final class: Students will bring their final product to class. They will be asked to share their essays or parts of their essays that they are proud of.
The students will not only learn elements of writing fiction, research and essay writing skills, but also hear from other students to learn about several historical events and time frames.
Students will be able to work at their own ability level while being challenged to grow as writers.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Aubrey and I have been a teacher for 16 years in grades Pre-K through high school, as well as teaching reading and math remediation. I specialize in K-8th grades and I love teaching just about anything! I enjoy making learning fun because I think we learn when we enjoy what we are engaged in! I use games and activities that get the learner involved. My philosophy is that we learn when we feel like the teacher cares, so I love to get to know my students and learn about the things they like and dislike. I believe in expecting the best from my students and giving my best as a teacher! Since beginning teaching, I have held one on one math and reading private tutoring and general lessons. I continue to hold weekly tutoring sessions with elementary students. I enjoy working in one on one settings helping bring out the best in my students outside of the regular classroom. I can't wait to see you in my classroom!
