Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Learners will be taught figurative language terms that I will provide ahead of class; similes, metaphors, idioms, personification and hyperboles. In class, we will review the terms and spot examples in text. We will then write our own examples together! After we review and practice writing our own examples, we will put together a short story using some of the terms and examples we came up with! The first 20 minutes of class will be review, followed by 15 minutes of writing our own examples. The rest of class (25 minutes) will be for writing a short story with figurative language! Learners and I will brainstorm together to come up with the story. If we are having SO much fun writing our story together and learners want to continue passed the hour time frame, there is no extra charge! In 1-1 class settings, I like to let students help me lead where the class goes! Learners are encouraged to share their ideas with me and ask questions at any time. This is meant to be a fun and engaging class, not stressful. I will share examples with learners using Nearpod. Learners will follow along with me as we complete matching and fill in the blank activities. I will use a Word document to draft our short story.
Learning Goals
Learners will be able to spot examples of figurative language in text and explain meaning, write their own examples of figurative language and draft a short story with my help!
