Every good story has memorable and well rounded characters, fascinating worlds and thorough plots that draw readers in. But how can we create these? What should we include when making fictional worlds of our own? What makes a character more relatable to the reader and how can we write exciting plots? In this multi-day course, students will learn the basics of crafting their own fictional settings, characters and plots for their stories. Each week, we will focus on a different topic (as listed in the schedule below) and students will be assigned writing exercises and activities to help them further develop their own stories and characters. Students will be given time in class to begin these activities as well as to workshop their ideas with their classmates and the teacher. The course schedule is as follows: Week One: World Building Week Two: Character Building Week Three: Plot Building Week Four: Building Healthy Writing Habits This class is primarily lecture based with opportunities for students to discuss and workshop their writing and progress. No previous experience is necessary, however, students will gain more from this class if they have stories they are already currently working on. Each class features approximately 30-45 minutes of lecture per topic, with 15-30 minutes for students to complete their writing exercises and activities in class as well as discuss their writing progress.
