Writing 101: Unicorn Writing! Learn to Write a Simple Paragraph for Beginners

Beginner writers are WELCOME! This class does not focus on handwriting or spelling, so it is ideal for encouraging struggling writers who may experience challenges in writing or young writers looking to boost their confidence. Students will fall in love with writing through fun games, playful projects, and positive encouragement. If your student is crazy about unicorns, this is the class for them!

Using unicorns as our unique paragraph model, students will learn to write a paragraph about a variety of topics. Students will be encouraged to write about topics that inspire them and share their unique ideas with the class. Bring your color and creativity to this class, it will be full of sparkly fun! 

Class one: Learning how to generate ideas for writing a paragraph and how to prevent writer's block. We will work together to brainstorm our favorite ideas and explore ways to brainstorm using alternative methods such as art, mapping, and more! 

Class two: Learning what makes a strong sentence and reviewing proper punctuation. We will practice writing sentences together through interactive games during class time, allowing students to feel confident in this skill as we progress towards their full paragraphs in the next class. 

Class three: Paragraph Mapping-learning about the function of each sentence in a paragraph while using a unique model to help students remember each part easily! Students will write a paragraph together in class, as well as form their own paragraphs if time allows. 

Class four:  Publishing & Editing. We will practice revising, and publishing the student's final paragraph. Students will have the opportunity to share their work within the class time as we finish and share each of our paragraphs together! 

Students will be provided with writing worksheets, helpful visuals, and feedback to help them strengthen their writing skills. Each class will include interaction with the teacher and peers in a small group format. Students will work together with peers to build a community paragraph. Each class will be designed to build the confidence and skill of new writers, including scaffolding available for even the timidest writer.
