US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Welcome to Writer's Workshop Camp! This class was designed to provide a framework for writing instruction that develops early writing skills and fluency while allowing learners to be creative and write about a topic of their own choosing. The flexibility of writing topic opens the door for learners to get excited about their writing and focus on topics that they enjoy. (Please note: this class has been developed specifically for beginning writers. Learners do not have to be fluent writers to successfully participate. Drawing pictures and using simple labels counts as writing for beginners.) Each class meeting will follow the same format (direct writing instruction, drafting, sharing) but will focus on a different beginning writing skill. ****During direct writing instruction learners will participate in a mini-lesson focusing on a specific writing skill to build their writing fluency. The schedule of mini-lesson topics can be found below. The direct writing instruction portion of class will also include a discussion of the writing process before we begin drafting our writing for the day. ****During the drafting portion of the lesson learners will take time to begin writing their story. Learners will be guided through the writing process one step at a time to draft their very own story complete with a picture and writing. While working, learners will be able to share ideas and discuss their writing. Help will be provided to any learners having a hard time deciding what to write on their own. ****During the sharing portion of the lesson learners will all be given an opportunity to share their writing with the group. Sharing is encouraged but not required. Mini-Lesson topics: December 5th: The 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why) December 6th: Labeling pictures and adding details (describing a noun) December 7th: Leaving spaces (spaces between letters in words vs. spaces between words in sentences) and Punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation point) December 8th: What gets a capital letter?
