HOW STUDENTS WILL LEARN In this dynamic writer's forum, students will cultivate the essential skills and behaviors needed to bring their creative ideas to life on paper. With a flexible pace that accommodates individual learning styles, students can further develop their writing abilities. This forum serves as a valuable supplement to any previous writing instruction students have received, whether through school or other platforms. Within this supportive community, young authors will have the opportunity to independently practice and refine their writing skills. Surrounded by like-minded peers who share their passion for creative writing, students will engage in empowering and collaborative experiences. C. HOW STUDENTS WILL INTERACT WITH TEACHER AND PEERS Writers have the flexibility to reach out to Mr. LeCara at any time, though he will work closely with writers on their projects. It's important to note that this forum is not a structured course, but rather a writing lab forum designed to foster creativity and provide a supportive environment for writers. For those seeking more personalized attention, students have the option to attend Mr. LeCara's other writing courses or schedule one-on-one sessions. D. CLASS STRUCTURE: Subject to change based on student interests, needs, and pace. • Each month, student authors will focus on a specific story element, starting with "Setting" in March and progressing to "Character," "Conflict," "Plot," and "Theme" in subsequent months. • Optional skill practice sheets related to the monthly story element focus will be provided three out of four weeks, offering guidance and considerations for writers to apply to their own works. • As a writing lab forum rather than a structured class, sessions are learner-directed, allowing writers to pursue their own interests and address their individual needs. • Writers can join at any week to work on their creative writing projects. • Weekly sessions will attempt to follow the following format: --Check-in (15 minutes): Catch up; writers identify their focus for the session. --Writing (45 minutes): Dedicated writing time. --Share time (15 minutes): Writers share work, progress, or insights. • The fourth week of each month is dedicated to Writer's Workshop. Writers have the option to attend only on these days, as the session will focus on discussing the work of participating authors. To participate, writers must share their work by posting it in the classroom no later than the night before the scheduled session. A worksheet will be provided to ensure a constructive, collaborative, and productive workshop environment.
Learning Goals
LEARNING GOALS. Student writers will come to...
• understand that writing improves when writers write... often
• recognize that good writing comes from reading... a lot
• feel comfortable enough to share their work, empowered and supported by their peers
• develop their own individual voice through their creative writing endeavors
• explore various writing techniques, and develop skills through pre-writing, editing, and re-writing
• witness the power of sharing, which will include read-alouds to share ideas and passages with the larger group. Student authors will be asked to evaluate their own work and the work of others.
