Students learn how to develop, write, and finish a short or novel-length story. As I take them from finding an idea to a polished draft, students learn and practice ELA milestones and develop close-reading skills.

Class experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Intermediate Level
Academic: I have a BA in English & Writing, an MFA in Creative Writing, and an MLIS in Library & Information Science.

Professional: I'm a published writer who currently teaches part-time for a university as an Adjunct Professor of Creative Writing and English. As an instructor, I bring 15+ years of professional experience working as a writer or with writers as an editor or educator. My publications include public radio (CBC Radio One), three history books for children (Full Tilt Press, 2020), book and theater reviews, architectural criticism, artist profiles, and other literary journalism published in national and independent newspapers, as well as a handful of short stories and creative nonfiction pieces published in literary journals, anthologies, and magazines in Canada and the States.
Homework Offered
Homework is negotiable. Generally, I assign reading homework and expect learners to write at least one page between meetings. However, the amount of reading and time spent writing between meetings depends on the learner's schedule, age, and goals. The time spent outside class might be just 15 minutes per week or up to 4 hours.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I provide written and verbal feedback on the student's weekly creative writing submission(s). Written feedback is sent through Outschool messages and classroom page. A letter grade is optional. Parent/Caregiver updates on student's progress are sent out 1x a month.
