Author/teacher Lola Schaefer will guide students in a variety of ways to brainstorm ideas and write in three different genres. Learners who register for this class need to be able to write thoughts independently. On Day 1, students will brainstorm ideas and write about the natural world. (This will NOT be report writing.) On Day 2, learners will brainstorm ideas and write a short story with a character, problem and resolution. And on Day 3, Lola will offer support to brainstorm ideas to create, draw and write captions or speech bubbles in cartoons.Learners need a notebook, or paper and pencil for these classes. Colored pencils or crayons are optional. This class is highly interactive. All students will be able to share ideas and their writing as it progresses. I teach through demonstration and question asking. Children are encouraged to take risks and try new strategies. Before or after class, we will always play a word or writing game, as well. The class is designed to build an understanding of writing, as well as a joy of self-expression.
Students will learn different ways to brainstorm their own original writing ideas.
They will be introduced to the basic structures of nonfiction writing, short story, and cartooning.
We will discuss purpose for writing different genres, as well as have an emphasis on strong word choice and the addition of details.notebook and pencil/pen or paper and pencil/pen colored pencils, markers, or crayons are optional
