"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." As writers, we start off writing like the authors we love. Then, as we grow as writers, we start to develop our own style. Who doesn't love stories about giant peaches and little girls who can fend off a bully with the flick of a finger? Roald Dahl wrote many of the most beloved books of childhood. To become a better writer, we're going to dive into the techniques Roald Dahl used to write his many books. In this class, we're going to look at the following topics: - Naming characters - Figures of speech - Story format - Lessons in the story For the first part of the class, we will be looking at the above topics and discuss examples from Dahl's books of these topics (we will not be reading books in class). Once we finish looking at the characteristics of Dahl's writing, we will brainstorm ideas for students to create their own short story written in the style of Roald Dahl. Students will work on writing their short story in class and will have the opportunity to share what they wrote at the end of class.
