Write, Draw, and Talk: Journal Writing for Kids

From the example of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, learners will create an entry in a personal journal, draw pictures to go with it, and share with the class (if they would like) in every session of this ongoing class. #superstar

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
Learners will practice using an outline to write a fluent, descriptive paragraph while collaborating with peers through discussion. The journal entries are loosely based on the series "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" by Jeff Kinney in that we will focus on writing about a life event and draw pictures to go with it. (The books will not be discussed in class and learners do not need to have read them prior to enrollment.) This style of journal writing helps even the most reluctant writer get excited to put the pen to paper!

After greetings, the teacher will model using the outline boxes and write a journal entry for the "Class Journal." This will be displayed by the teacher screen sharing a Google Slide presentation (learner account not needed). Learners will be encouraged to draw their own boxes, write the date, and participate in giving ideas to write about. Following the writing, learners will have the opportunity to draw pictures on the screen using Zoom tools to decorate the journal entry.

Learners will then choose an event they would like to focus on and fill out the outline to prepare for their own journal entry. There will be plenty of class discussion and teacher guidance through the brainstorming session. A PDF adjective list will be shown on the screen so learners can pick three to incorporate into their writing. Learners will then write their entries independently while the teacher checks in to gauge progress and answer questions. When finished writing, learners are encouraged to draw pictures in their journals to illustrate the event they have chosen.

The class will conclude with an optional sharing session where journals can be read and pictures shown in the video feed.

Since each session will be an independent entry determined by the day's events of the student's choosing, there are no set themes. Also, the goal is to finish an entry each day. Therefore, students can enroll and unenroll at any time.

After some time in the course, learners will have a nice keepsake journal to look back on in the future. This will also track their progress through the class.
