US Grade 4 - 7
I love teaching writing and watching how proud students are of themselves after they create a good piece! This winter-themed class will allow them to do just that. Students will be inspired to write about ice using audio clips, photos, video clips and even holding ice cubes! Students need to bring a cup of ice cubes and a towel (to dry their hands to ensure electronics remain safe) as well as their imaginations to this class. This one-time small group class includes a variety of activities that allows learners to explore the fascinating force of ice and understand and have fun with language and poetry. Many students do not like planning or writing poetry, but they will have fun writing this 'ice' inspired Catalogue poem; it won’t seem like work! Guided by an experienced and certified English teacher who loves teaching writing, students will explore poetic terms through discussion and fun activities in order to create a well-written poem by the end of the class. The class will start will a brief greeting and a short trivia activity to get students comfortable. Next students will learn about (for some review) poetry form/style and poetic figurative language including onomatopoeia, imagery and similes. (The more students learn and review these terms, the stronger their writing becomes.) Students with then examine a poem sample. Following this, students will do some brainstorming and planning for their poems (on the handouts provided) and be inspired by a variety of images, video clips and audio clips. Finally students will write their own poems. If there is time and students would like, they will share their poems at the end of class. (Students are welcome to send me their poems after class for feedback). I am a very positive and encouraging teacher (with 20 years experience) and teach using a variety of methods that appeal to both visual and linguistic learners. This class will use many approaches for learning including discussion, slides, video clips and worksheets and students will receive feedback throughout. Students DO NOT need to have any prior knowledge about poetry. Students taking this class are strongly encouraged to have their cameras on as it develops students' intrapersonal skills and I can more effectively teach and respond to students' non-verbal cues. Please have the worksheet for the class printed and ready to use at the start of class. You are welcome to request another time for this class if it does not work for your schedule or request a private one-on-one class.
Learning Goals
Students will write a poem that will include at least two types of figurative language.
