 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introduction to Formal Essay Writing
This lesson covers the main components of MLA formatting, including how to format an essay properly, the MLA citing rules, and the main parts of a literary analysis essay.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Crash Course on MLA & Writing the Thesis Statement and Body Paragraphs
Lesson 2: Part 1 will cover how to set up a document properly in MLA formatting. Lesson 2: Part 2 will break down the three parts of the literary analysis essay: introduction, body, and conclusion, and the necessary parts of each. Using a short story or poem, learners will decide on a literary device they want to analyze and start writing their thesis statement and body paragraph.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Writing the Introduction
This lesson's focus is just the introduction of the essay. Introductions are super important, especially writing a strong attention-getter. This lesson will take the learner through the parts of the introduction, types of attention-getters that are great to use, and then show them how to build the background information to form the perfect introduction.

Lesson 4
Writing the Conclusion
During this lesson, learners will dive into the three parts of the concluding paragraph, write a practice conclusion, and then write the conclusion to their essays.

The Works Cited Page and Editing Process
During this lesson, learners will go through the steps to creating a Works Cited page, view the grading rubric, and gain some new tips on how to edit their writing for clarity, grammar, word choice, and more. BONUS CONTENT: a comprehensive review of the literary analysis enrichment!
Through detailed instruction and feedback from me, you will learn how to format an essay in MLA, cite sources properly, and refine your analytical and writing skills, making you a more effective and persuasive writer!
I am a 20+ year English teacher and professor who absolutely loves teaching the writing process to teens.  I have experience teaching both in-person and several years teaching online classes, both live asynchronously. My goal is to help you become more confident in your writing and teach you the basics of MLA and formal essay writing.
Homework Offered
Each week learners will be assigned enrichment activities to help them build their literary analysis and watch short, weekly instructional videos to guide them through the process. By using Google Docs or Microsoft Word when submitting work, I am able to provide extensive feedback every step of the way!

Assessments Offered
A final grading rubric will be issued at the end of the course, detailing how the learner does on their final draft.
Grades Offered
Each week I will be providing detailed handouts, outlines, and other enrichment activities to guide you in this process.  It is super helpful if you have access to Google Docs or Microsoft Word.
