Class Experience

Students are introduced to 5 new words (the, see, and, a, I). Students will have fun clapping, chanting, and cheering these words.  We will also work on writing them with proper handwriting.  Next, students will be introduced to a new book.  This is a beginning reader book using several of the above new words (the, see, and, a, I). Students will practice reading the new book. If time permits, students will practice writing a sentence and drawing a picture using the same sentence frame in the book. This course is for beginning readers.

Learning Goals

Students will learn 5 new words.
Students will work on their handwriting while writing these 5 new sight words.
Students will learn to read a simple, short book containing several of these new words. 
Students will write a sentence using a sentence frame.

Supply List
Students will need:
a pencil 
paper (you can choose to print out my writing paper, or use a plain sheet of writing paper)
book (the book should be printed and stapled together, so your child can read it independently)
writing prompt (you can choose to print out this prompt or use a plain sheet of paper)
 1 file available upon enrollment
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

My name is Ms. Shannon, and I am so thrilled to be a teacher on Outschool. 
My Courses:
I offer various classes including, but not limited to:
First Grade Reading, Kindergarten Reading, Phonics, Sight Words, Beginning Writing, and Private Tutoring. I also offer private reading assessments and tutoring 1:1. I can help you determine what level your child is reading on and help you create a plan for progress. If you don't see an active class available, feel free to reach out and request a time. 

My Professional Background:
I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from UNCW in 1996. I am a licensed teacher in the areas of Early Childhood (ages 3-8), Elementary Education (ages 8-12), and a Reading Specialist. I also hold an NBCT (National Board Certified Teacher) license and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate. I have over 25 years of teaching experience and have been teaching online since 2020.
I currently homeschool two of my three children and work from home.

My Teaching Philosophy:
I believe meeting a student where they are is essential to help them learn successfully. I offer a differentiated style to allow all learners an opportunity to participate.  I believe in a multi-sensory approach to learning. I want all children to love reading and learning in general. I am passionate about children gaining confidence in their abilities and feeling successful.
