In this class, students will read the novel Wonder outside of class and discuss the assigned chapters during our class sessions.  This novel study is designed to promote critical reading, thinking, vocabulary, and writing for middle-grade students (4th-6th grades).  

Some of the comprehension skills addressed in this novel study include:

Students are expected to have read the assigned chapters before class to be prepared for class discussions. This novel has 121 Chapters, but they are only about 3-4 pages long. 

Wonder, by R.J Palacio is about August Pullman, who's been homeschooled his entire life due to some medical issues related to his craniofacial abnormalities. However, when Auggie turns 10, his family begins to realize that he needs to function in a world where people aren't always kind to those that look different. Auggie is enrolled in school where he finds friends but must learn to deal with bullies.

The author's message of choosing kindness is powerful. This is an important message for
students to learn.

Parental Guidance
These texts are approved for the middle-grade level and are designed to challenge students.  Please refer to commonsense media to make sure that the novel is appropriate for your learner. Some of the text does involve sad situations. The book contains bullying and hateful language but goodness wins out, and readers should find it inspiring and uplifting.
