*This is a scaled down version of my popular Women of Hamilton class (9-14 yrs). This class is perfect for the young Hamilton fan that wants to learn more about the history of the Schuyler sisters, but would rather not take a highly detailed history class. In this multi-day class, we will discuss the real lives of the women in the American musical about the life of Alexander Hamilton. As we talk about the Schuyler sisters, the students will color their own coloring sheet of the Schuyler sister of the week. The women of early American history are often forgotten because they weren't allowed to play a role in the Revolutionary War or politics the way their male counterparts did. While Lin-Manuel Maranda displayed strong female characters in Hamilton: An American Musical, there wasn't enough time to explain their lives entirely. We will take a closer look at the lives of the Schuyler sisters: Angelica Schuyler Church, Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, and Peggy Schuyler Van Rensselaer. We will discuss their real lives, how they were connected to Alexander Hamilton and early American history. We will also talk about what Hamilton: An American Musical got correct, and what it got wrong. This class would be a great for young learner that is interested in early American history, famous American women, or any fan of Hamilton: An American Musical. We will read or listen to small exerts of some of the songs that feature each character from the Hamilton musical. This will include "The Schuyler Sisters", "A Winters Ball", "Satisfied", "Who Lives Who Dies Who Tells Your Story". The Sunday before each session Learners will receive a PDF of the week's Schuyler sister coloring sheet. Please print this out and bring to class. At the end of the first session, students will receive a link to my Women of Hamilton Bonus Virtual Classroom to learn more about what life was like for the women of Hamilton. Bonus materials include Alexander's goodbye letter to Eliza, the women of Hamilton's grave sites, slavery at the Schuyler mansion, information about the Grange (Hamilton's little place in Harlem), 18th century fashion, and more! I run an open class, where students will be encouraged to ask questions and state their opinion. While participation in the group discussion is encouraged, it is not enforced. Session 1: Angelica Schuyler Church Session 2: Eliza Schuyler Hamilton Session 3: Peggy Schuyler Van Rensselaer Ms. Sirena’s Online Class Policies: At the start of every new section, I will need to verify Learner identification. Your learner will need to turn on their video at the beginning of class unless they have already verified with Outschool Safety and have a green check mark next to their name. After verification, the Learner is free to turn off their camera for the remainder of class. I know all of my Learners live busy lives. I allow eating and drinking in my class, as long as it doesn’t become a distraction to the other Learners. I expect all of my Learners to respect everyone in class. It is okay to disagree with others, but it is not okay to insult other’s world views. REFUND POLICIES: This multi-day class has a limited refund policy: full refund until a week in advance, or within 24 hours of purchase (until class starts). As per Outschool policy, if no Learners show up to class after 10 minutes of start time, I will log out of the classroom. Student no shows may not entitle you to a class refund. However, I understand that life events happen. If there is an emergency causing your student to miss class. Please notify me and support@outschool.com as soon as you know your student will not make class. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, my name is Sirena. I am a crafty momma who loves to share my passion of creating and learning. I earned my Nutrition and Fitness BS graduate degree from the University of Missouri in 2005. I started teaching on Outschool as a means to connect and help share my passions with other people who were interested in the same things as I. I would love all of my students to leave my class with more inspiration to learn more about whatever they are passionate about and never be afraid to show others your true self.
Growing up, history was not my favorite topic. It seemed filled with dates, battles, and was beige and boring. It wasn't until I became an adult, and learned the personal stories of historic people, that I starting taking an interest in history and famous historical women.
I am a work at home mom of two special kiddos, age 10 and 6. My daughter, Catalina, is a bright 5th grader that loves to read. Blake, my son, is a fun loving 1st grader, who is on the Autism spectrum. To round out my family, I also live with my husband, Justin, who shares my love of history. We also are a house full of pets. We have two parakeets, a dog, turtle, and many fish! When I am not teaching craft, art, baking, and history classes for Outschool, I am managing my enamel pin Etsy shop.
When I am not teaching I love spending time with my family doing things together like baking, cooking, gardening, and watching movies together. I am an avid reader and a lover of history. I was born with the need to create and love that I can share my creations and passions with others.
I am very excited to begin offering classes with Outschool and I hope to meet you and your child soon!
If there is a class that you would like to see offered that I currently do not offer, please reach out to me! Thank you kindly! 😀
Sincerely,
Sirena
