US Grade 2 - 5
Intermediate Level
This class will feature three holiday themed STEM challenges that learners will complete during the class. We will discuss how engineers work using the engineering design loop. Students will be presented with a different challenge each day and use easy to obtain materials to complete the challenge. Most projects will use recyclables and art materials. Each of the challenges will explore a different science concept, which students will learn about during the class - friction, gravity, sound, insulators, and force and motion. Day 1: Santa's Sleigh is Slipping! Can you design a sleigh for Santa that will go down the rooftop (ramp) without spilling its load (Starburst candies)? Day 2: Jingle Bell Silencer: The jingle bells are waking up children when Santa delivers his packages. Can you design a "silencer" that Santa can use to muffle the sound while he makes his deliveries? Day 3: Help in the Workshop: The Elves are making toys all day, but the toys are piling up and they don't have time to move them. Can you design a conveyor belt that will move the toys away from the workbench without breaking them?
Learning Goals
Students will learn the engineering design process as they problem solve their way through each challenge.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Texas Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree from Grand Canyon University
I served as a public school educator for over 26 years. During that time, I specialized in science, math, and STEM engineering design, including coding and robotics through after school programs. After leaving the classroom, I was a science and math instructional coach in the largest school district in my state, working to help teachers improve academic achievement in science and math with their students.
