Beginner Level
In this course, students will be introduced to common math-based topics seen in high school chemistry level 1. Schools may cover this topic during semester 1 or semester 2. We will cover scientific notation, dimensional analysis, temperature conversions, and density. In addition, students will also learn about uncertainties in measurements, how significant figures contribute to the accuracy of measurements and how to report the results of calculations with the correct number of significant figures. I will be teaching using presentations and practice problems. Worksheets with practice problems will be available in the classroom on the day before class. Students must print the worksheets before class; they are expected to take some notes as they fill in the blanks on the handouts. This class is an interactive class; when in doubt, students are encouraged to ask questions. I will be assisting students while they work. Depending on the pace of the class, some lessons will include online assessments to check for student understanding, and students may have homework. The recording of each session will be available to enrolled students after attending one live session (as long as there are students present in each session). This is meant to help learners review or catch up if they miss anything during class as the class may have diverse learners. Day 1: =>Scientific notation & using a scientific calculator =>Practice problems =>Online quiz Day 2: =>SI units =>Introduction to dimensional analysis (part 1) =>Practice problems: converting between various units using dimensional analysis Day 3 =>Dimensional analysis (part 2) =>Practice problems: converting between metric units Day 4 =>Practice rearranging equations =>Temperature units and temperature scale =>Density =>Practice problems Day 5: =>Uncertainty in measurements =>Significant figures & rounding Day 6: =>Calculations with significant figures =>Online quiz Note: =>Topics from one session may run into the subsequent session depending on the progress of the overall class =>I will leave the zoom session if nobody shows up within the first 5 minutes of each session. =>class may run over the allotted time (by 5 to 10 minutes) at times depending on the class constitution
