Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
In this winter-themed math class, 1st grade students will review and practice addition within 20 through fun activities and learning games.

At the beginning of class, the students and teacher will have a discussion about the topic(s) of the week so the teacher can assess the students’ prior knowledge of the subject.

Throughout the class, the teacher will introduce and teach the topic(s) using the “I Do, We Do, You Do” method. This instructional method starts with the teacher giving an example, followed by the teacher and student solving a problem or completing a task together, then finally, the student is given a problem or task to complete on his/her own, with support given as necessary.

Here is the schedule for this math class:

Part 1: "True or False" game - Learners will be shown addition math facts with sums between 0 and 20. The learners will have to decide if the math fact is "true" or false.

Part 2: Missing addends on snowflakes- Learns will use different strategies to determine the missing addend in the addition sentence.

Part 3: Word problems - Learners will listen carefully to the word problem, write an addition sentence, and solve. For example, "The children made 8 gingerbread cookies. Then, they made 11 more. How many gingerbread cookies did they make in all?"

Each of the three parts of class will be separated by brain breaks. The brain breaks will take 1-2 minutes and will be "Would You Rather" questions. For example, "Would you rather build a snowman or go sledding? Would you rather eat snow or icicles?"

Throughout the entire class, many discussion questions will be asked in order to promote critical thinking, to help the students to relate to the lesson and to introduce each topic within the lesson.

This class is best for any student ages 5 to 8, or those students looking to learn, review and practice 1st grade addition from 0 to 20. Students do not need to know the concepts or topics of the class beforehand. We will learn and review in class.

The class materials will be presented via Google Slides and screen shared on the teacher's screen only. Learners will need nothing outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom. Students may need to print materials prior to the start of class. Please check the parental guidance and materials sections.
