Week 1Lesson 1Red PandasIn this wildlife science class, students will learn important facts about the characteristics, habitat, diet, family life, and the ongoing field work behind the conservation of the Asian Red Panda.
All of the content presented in this animal science class is factual and has been researched through at least three current scientific resources and aligns with Next Generation Science and Common Core ELA standards-based curriculum guides. (CCSS for speaking/listening standards and NGSS for science standards.) This class and its activities can provide a great way to develop, enrich or follow a learner's interests, as well as supplementing any afterschool or homeschool learning program. Specific lesson related learning goals include: 1. Students will learn facts about the physical characteristics of the Asian Red Panda such as size, features, diet and habitat. 2. Students will learn how scientists use these characteristics to compare and classify a species like the Red Panda. 3. Students will learn why conservation of Red Pandas is so important and what is being done to prevent the extinction of this rare Asian species. 4. Students will also learn new vocabulary words related to the study of Red Pandas.
I have a BA in Elementary Education and my credentials are uploaded to Outschool. I taught classroom science, art and language arts to both preschool and elementary aged students for almost twenty years before coming to the Outschool online platform. As a child, I first developed a strong love of nature and animals through books and hands-on experiences. As a teacher, I'm constantly reading, researching and learning everything I can about wild animal conservation and the natural world.
Homework Offered
Science lessons include activity worksheets that help students to process and apply the content of the lesson for learning goals reinforcement and enrichment. Examples include: a creature labeling and classification activity, matching and identifying creature concepts, writing vocabulary words and conservation brainstorming worksheets designed to support science, writing and math concepts. I'll also include art templates for creative enrichment.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I offer a quiz that can be used as an assessment or simply a fun way to wrap up the learning experience. I will include the assessment as a link to a quiz I created using Kahoot. Please contact me if you would like to have the quiz in a worksheet form.Grades Offered
Each learner will receive a certificate of completion for the lesson and its activities. Learners who want specific feedback or letter grades on lesson activities can contact me and then send me a copy of their work by uploading it as a message through the classroom.
NO scary or violent content here, just scientific facts presented in a positive way to encourage learning and scientific discovery. *Video lessons were created and recorded by me, made available to be viewed through a link via YouTube. The video is an embedded link and so the lesson displays on the classroom page. No account is necessary to access the lesson and you do not have to go to YouTube. *Optional Assessment Quiz on Kahoot: A link to a quiz I created using Kahoot will be shared as part of the available classroom materials.
