In this class we will focus on solving one-step equations which will include whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Students will learn how to solve for every kind of equations by using the inverse operation to isolate the variable. Students should have experience with fraction and decimal computation, as well as, basic multiplication and division facts. We will practice many examples together, and then the students will end the class by solving a "Who-dun-it Math Murder Mystery". As students successfully solve these equations, they will be provided a clue which will get them one step closer to solving the crime. *Students will be given a link in the chat for a google form to complete the mystery. Students will be moved into breakout rooms and will have the choice to work independently or with a partner. The teacher will move around the breakout rooms to help students with specific questions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, my name is Rachel Kohlmiller and I love teaching math! I never thought I would be teaching math, but once I made the switch from preschool to 5th/6th grade, I feel in love. I graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I then completed my Master's degree in Special Education from Edinboro University. I also have a Middle School Math endorsement to teach 7th-9th grade math. I have been teaching math at the middle school level for the past 9 years. I currently live in Northern Virginia and have been teaching here for the past 8 years. I have worked with students from many different backgrounds and have experience teaching in co-taught Special Education classes, co-taught English Language Learners classes, as well as Advanced Academics classes. I believe that learning should be fun, and that students should feel comfortable taking risks when it comes to their education. Math is about exploring, making connections, and finding patterns and relationships. I encourage all of my students to talk about their thinking and explain their strategies. What I love about math is that although there may be a correct answer, there are many different paths to take to get to that answer. I love being able to connect with students and help support them along their educational journey. I do not have any kids of my own, but I have a 4 year old Great Dane who thinks he is human and gets spoiled on a daily basis!
