Class Experience
Learn to make 4 cake flavors all from a white boxed cake mix. We will start with a base recipe including flour, butter, oil, water, eggs, baking soda and a boxed white cake mix. By using the add-ins below, each week we will make the following cake flavors: Week 1: Vanilla Week 2: Chocolate Week 3: Lemon or Key Lime Week 4: Coconut Add-ins include: Week 1: Vanilla instant pudding, vanilla extract Week 2: Chocolate instant pudding, cocoa powder Week 3: Lemon instant pudding, lemon or key lime juice Week 4: Instant coconut or vanilla pudding, coconut milk Various baking techniques will be taught such as measuring wet, dry and semi-solid ingredients, leveling, sifting, mixing, and more. We will also make a complimentary cake icing. Icing recipes will include several buttercream and cream cheese flavors. These icings will be suitable for creating decorations, such as pipped flowers or borders, if desired. Base ingredients needed to make icing will include butter, vegetable shortening, powdered sugar and water. Icing recipe add-ins will include: Lemon or key lime juice Cocoa powder Sweetened shredded coconut Coconut flavoring Cream cheese Students will require the use of the following kitchen equipment: Mixing bowls Mixing spoons Measuring cups Hand or stand mixer 2 8-inch cake pans Muffin tin Baker’s Joy Oven Spoons Butter Knives Spatulas Each week, a new recipe and video will be posted. Learners will be invited to ask questions, share pictures of their baked goods, and discuss ways they made the recipes their own! Complete the following challenges each week: Week 1: Finish with textured icing Week 2: Finish with smooth icing Week 3: Add icing flower decorations Week 4: Make cupcakes!
Learning Goals
Students will learn that the science of baking can be simplified by adding boxed cake mix. Adding this as an ingredient helps to stabilize a scratch recipe and reduce common baking errors.

Parental Guidance
Please be advised that the ingredients used in this class contain many common allergens. Supervision of your learner while using any kitchen equipment is required at all times. I will post one instructional YouTube video link each week that will teach the week's lesson. These are video lessons I have created. While no account needs to be created to view these videos, please supervise your learner's use of this external platform.
