This is a 90 minute class where we will learn the very basics on how to sew with needle and thread and use those skills to make a little pillow!
Class experience
Sewing is a basic life-skill that is useful to anyone and everyone. From mending ripped clothing or toys, to creating garments and costumes, sewing is a multi-use skill that for most will see life-long application and for some may even become a profession. In this beginner level sewing class, students will learn the foundational skills of hand sewing. This class starts from the absolute basics, so no prior knowledge is required. Students will be introduced to the skill of sewing. They will learn the basic equipment (needles, pins, thread, clips, thimble, fabric, and embroidery hoops), and how to use them. They will then learn and practice each of the foundational stitches; the running stitch, the back stitch, the whip stitch, and the ladder stitch. Learners will then end the class by using each of the stitches to create a small pincushion for themselves.
I have been sewing since I was 5 years old. I am 26 today and create some of my own clothes and all of my own costumes from scratch. For me sewing is a foundational life skill that I love to pass on.
Students will need; a pack of assorted needles - $1.99 thread (in a contrasting color to your fabric) - $1.99 fabric pins - $1.99 4-6 in embroidery hoop - 10- 15 cm (wood is preferable, but plastic is fine) - $1.75 fabric - one 1ft square and two 5in squares - $0-$9 --- any type is fine, but cotton broad cloth or muslin will work best (both can be found in packs of scrap fabric at most craft stores), old cotton sheets will also work well mini or small binder clips - $1.59 - $7.79 batting, pillow stuffing, or teddy bear stuffing (for the pillow) - $0-$10 (we really don't need much so don't splurge if you don't have to) small scissors large scissors optional; thimble - please opt for a silicone or leather one as they are much easier to use - $2.99-$4.99 note; as far as the needles, thread, and pins are concerned, most mini sewing kits have pretty much everything needed for this class (tools wise) - $1.99 - $11.99
This class will involve sharp tools such as needles, pins, and scissors. While injury is highly unlikely, it is possible. Having an adult in the house would be preferred. Please note: Supervising adults must stay off camera for the duration of the class.
