How often do you get the chance to choose your own name? If you love ancient Egypt and have always admired or been mystified by the ancients' names, you've chosen the right class! Here's what we'll do during our time together. Before you decide on your own ancient Egyptian name, we'll talk and answer questions about: 𓂀 Why would an ancient Egyptian be so happy if you chose his or her name? 𓂀 The difference between royal names (like those of a pharaoh or queen) and common names. 𓂀 Why...
Students will learn several aspects of social status in ancient Egypt by studying names. They will understand the magical importance names held for the ancient Egyptians. Finally, they will get a real kick out of picking their own Egyptian name - whether royal or common - and see what it looks like in hieroglyphics.
I hold a Certificate of Museum Studies from Harvard University and, in June, I will receive my Diploma in Egyptology for a one-year program from Oxford College in England. And I’ve been to Egypt three times on personalized, educational tours. As a certified school substitute, I make the day more enjoyable - if it works out - by bringing an ancient Egyptian object into the classroom, whether I'm teaching language arts, social studies, science, consumer economics, art or even Native American studies. I've been captivated by ancient Egypt since I was 10 years old. And I feel it's my destiny to share my enthusiasm for and expertise on this beautiful and brilliant 5000-year-old civilization with all of you. I hope to see you soon for a class. I think you'll agree that The Egyptian Room is an attractive, fun and inspiring place to learn. And, please, if you like, call me Ms. Sennuwy - my chosen ancient Egyptian name.
I will assign no homework to students except to enjoy their newfound names. But I always encourage learners to do more research on their own outside of class.
1 file available upon enrollmentPlease bring plain, unlined paper with a fine highlighter or marker. Red and black are good colors to use.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Assessment will be informal. Upon enrollment, kids will download a file with a short, fun pre-lesson quiz before the class. Afterward, I will ask some questions from that quiz to see what students have learned or retained.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
There is nothing parents have to monitor, although we will discuss the magic involved with words and names that the ancient Egyptians believed in. There may be some kids who are sensitive to the notion that magic might have been associated with certain names.
