Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Students will learn about the history of the Holocaust through personal narrative, discussion, and a documentary called "Paperclips". We will spend some time discussing the documentary as well as other reading materials. We will also spend time writing personal reflections about what each individual is learning and taking away from this close-up study.
Week 1: Introduction and What is the Holocaust?
Week 2: Conditions Before the Holocaust: What is antisemitism? What were some of the common antisemitic tropes and beliefs that ignited large-scale hatred of Jews?
Week 3: State sponsored violence and the concept of "The Final Solution": 
Week 4: Concentration camps: Conditions, survival, and liberation
Week 5: Who were the important people involved? Oscar Schindler and other "heroes" : We will also discuss the heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and the Bielski partisans.
Week 6: The end of World War Two in Europe and the end of the Holocaust: What happened after the Holocaust?
Week 7: What lessons can we still learn today? Discussion of "Paperclips" and how we can now take the lessons of the Holocaust and apply it to today.

Learning Goals

Students will study the process by which the Holocaust was allowed to happen and was accepted by whole countries. 
Students will view and discuss the documentary "Paperclips".
Students will also analyze the world's response to this event.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
The Holocaust is an extremely sensitive piece of history. I have taught the Holocaust to fourth graders before and I take great care to present the content in an age appropriate manner. I do welcome any and all parent participation.
Supply List
We will be using the movie "Paperclips" and excerpts from the book, "Night", by Elie Wiesel. We will also use other eye-witness accounts throughout the class. All of these will be provided by the teacher.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
