We live in an era where producers and DJ's have risen to the levels of rockstars from previous generations. Making a record entirely within a computer might be rebuked by old school musicians, but it only takes a simple musical loop created in one of these programs to understand that music production and digital audio workstations (DAWs) are as viable a vocation as guitar, piano, or vocal lessons. This course is designed to show students some of the basic possibilities at their disposal within Ableton Live. Programs like this have plenty of bells and whistles that can intimidate a newcomer to the craft. This brief overview will give students a glance at what you can start doing with the most basic concepts of music production. 'What It Takes To Make a Beat' is a free form lecture-based class that leaves plenty of time for student questions. The instructor will be creating an entirely new music loop from scratch, asking for and responding to student feedback to create an original and collaborative piece of music. No prior knowledge of music production, theory, or previous music lessons is required for your student's interest to be piqued. Before committing the time or money to the forward-thinking world of music production, take this course to see just how easy it is to get started.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been producing music on my laptop for the better part of a decade, and it has opened up more doors in my life than I can count (Outschool being one of my favorites!). I have played gigs throughout the Pacific Northwest of the United States, composed music for video games and advertisements, and so much more. It's changed my life for the better, and I'm eager for it to change yours or your students!
