Kerbal Space Program (KSP) is a rocket simulation program used by rocket scientists and gamers alike. Not only is it loads of fun, but it teaches many things about rocketry & space that are hard to learn outside of a real-time simulation like this. It started as just a video game, but parts of it were built by NASA & the ESA, and many very successful rocket & space professionals still play it, while designing and flying real rockets. "In KSP, you must build space-worthy craft, capable of flying your crew out into space, without killing them. At your disposal is a collection of parts, which must be assembled to create a functional ship. Each part has its own function and will affect the way a ship flies (or doesn't). So strap yourself in, and get ready to try some Rocket Science! The game has different game modes, you can play the Career Mode if you want to expand and manage your own Space Center, taking on missions and researching new technologies. Or you can play Sandbox mode if you're only interested in flying and discovering the Kerbal universe without restrictions. There is even a mid point between these two, Science mode." Here are some examples of people who regularly play KSP: -Elon Musk [Founder & Chief Engineer of SpaceX, Tesla, & more] -Claims it is his favorite game, by far. -Tory Bruno [CEO of United Launch Alliance] -Regularly mentions it on Twitter, and sometimes shares pictures of his creations. -Peter Beck [CEO & Chief Engineer of Rocket Lab] -Scott Kelly [NASA Astronaut who spent 520 days in space] -Used KSP to teach people about Orbital Mechanics. (See below under "learner supply list" for where to purchase KSP at a discounted price) We will begin the class with introductions and ask learners what they already know about KSP & why they are interested in learning how to play. (Approx. 5 minutes) We will discuss what KSP is, how it teaches us Rocket Science, where to go for the best tutorials, and who in the space industry plays KSP regularly. (Approx. 20 minutes) Learners will then see a demo of their teacher playing KSP. (Approx. 5 minutes) The class will be a combination of slides, demo's, and Q&A. Learners who use the provided tutorials and successfully achieve orbit are welcome to join with friends in Teacher Tom's weekly KSP challenge classes which are available for 8-10yr, 10-14yr and 14-18yr. Achieving orbit is required before taking the the weekly challenge classes. Learners who would like some 1:1 assistance achieving orbit can request this and take Teacher Tom's 1:1 STEM mentoring classes. Join us to begin your journey to understanding Rocket Science with Teacher Tom!
Learning Goals
Learners will leave class knowing what Kerbal Space Program (KSP) is, how it's used to teach Rocket Science, where to go for the best tutorials so they can practice on their own, where to get the best price to purchase KSP, and which key players in the space industry play KSP.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Learners will not be playing Kerbal Space Program during this short intro class, therefore they do not need to own the game to take this class. This class is designed to give learners an introduction to KSP to see if they may be interested in using it to learn or better understand Rocket Science. Please make sure your learner knows in advance that they will not be gaming during this class. Learners who want to continue on to Teacher Tom's KSP weekly challenges classes must have achieved orbit in KSP before enrolling in order to maintain the quality of the class content and the success of your learner. Rocket Science takes time to learn. Thank you for understanding.
Supply List
While there are no supplies required for this class, in order to play Kerbal Space Program, learners will need Kerbal Space Program, and have a computer capable of running it. (If you have a newer gaming console, it is an option to get the game for the console instead, but this can be much more challenging to use vs. a keyboard and mouse, so I don't recommend it) (For Computer system requirements, see https://www.kerbalspaceprogram.com/product/kerbal-space-program-steam/) (For discounted purchase of the game for download via Steam, check out https://www.g2a.com/kerbal-space-program-steam-key-global-i10000014989005 [Teacher not affiliated, it's just a good deal I found])
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Teacher Tom has built rockets and made rocket fuels in the past. (We will NOT be teaching learners how to make their own rocket fuel on Outschool.) Tom has also successfully taught Kerbal Space Program weekly challenge classes as well as several other Space & Rocket Science classes. Tom was recently featured as one of Outschool's EPIC teachers for "Passion-driven" teaching.
