US Grade 6 - 9
Are you curious to learn more about Roman numerals? Have you ever noticed wondered what the phrases on a US one dollar bill mean? Are you interested in learning some Latin words and phrases? Do you want to dazzle your friends and acquaintances with your etymological knowledge? This course is one of several in the "What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?" series, in which students learn about the many ways in which the influence of ancient Rome and the Latin language appears in our everyday lives. It's often said that Latin is a "dead" language. Would it surprise you, then, to know that even as you are reading this course description, you are reading Latin? That's because about 60% of English words are derived from Latin! And this is only one way in which Latin shows up in our daily lives! In this one-time class, we will discuss the use of Latin on currency, learn some Roman numerals, and have an etymology lesson! We'll also look at the meaning behind some Latin phrases that have found their way into English usage, learn some famous Latin quotes, and much more! This course, though listed as the second in a series, has no prerequisites. All of the courses in the "What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?" series can be taken as standalone courses, though students are encouraged to mix and match various installments or even to take the entire series (the series is continuing to be developed, and more classes will be added over time)! Each course is designed to feature exclusive material--no two classes in the series have the same content. Please note that this is not a language learning course. This class can serve as a complement to current, prior, or future Latin language or classical civilization study, or it can serve as a standalone class for any student interested in classical history, mythology, Latin language, etymology, or cool trivia.

I have a BA in Latin Language & Literature and an MA in Classics. I have twenty years of experience in teaching and tutoring Latin language, mythology, ancient history, etymology, and literature on the middle school, high school, and college levels. As a passionate and enthusiastic advocate for all things classics, I love to build bridges between ancient Rome and the modern world, to help students to feel connected to a language and a people from which so much of Western civilization stems. I want to see students excited about classics, to feel that they are discovering something mysterious and thrilling, to see the ancient world come to life in front of their eyes!
