Class Experience

In this course we will cover techniques with different drawing supplies. Each week will feature a different supply and cover how to appropriate use each medium to achieve great results.

Our weekly schedule will be:
week 1-pencil techniques
week 2-charcoal and charcoal pencil techniques
week 3-pen techniques
week 4-oil pastels techniques
week 5-chalk pastels techniques and homework assignment
week 6- show of week 5 assignment and evaluation.

Students do not need any experience in any of the mediums above. We will go over basic techniques to help them use each supply to get the best results with it. Most students will have used many of these in school classes- if all of the students are already familiar with the medium, we will progress to more advanced techniques. Students are encouraged to have plenty of paper or a sketchbook to hold their weekly medium sheets. Loose paper or printer paper may be more desirable for messier mediums like charcoal and chalk pastel.

Final assignment for the course will be to create a piece of art using their favorite medium. The subject matter is their choice. Finished artwork must be 5x7 or larger. Details for homework will be posted after the 5th week.

Learning Goals

Students will learn techniques for drawing with pencil, pen, charcoal, pastels, and pen. We will cover value, shading, composition, and some basic color theory as we learn how to blend and properly use each medium.
