45 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
This ongoing class will allow students an opportunity to explore several different science topics, all of which are centered around a "weird" holiday from the week. For example, during the first week students will be learning about the feet of animals, including humans. They will discover the importance of feet and how different animals use their very different types of feet in many kinds of ways, depending on their specific needs. This first week's class will be centered around August 17th's "I love my feet" day. My teaching style is a combination of direct instruction and student centered exploration. These ongoing classes will begin with an activity or discussion aimed at getting students to explore their prior knowledge as it relates to the lesson's science topic. This will be followed by a brief period of direct instruction about the topic, highlighting any pertinent details the students are not already familiar with as evidenced by the prior student discussion or activity. Following this period of instruction, which will include input from the students in the form of guiding questions, students will take part in an activity, either in the form of a demonstration, experiment, or craft that will highlight what they have learned and discovered. Lastly, students will discuss with the class what they observed in the demonstration/experiment or what they created in the craft and reflect on how their findings or creation represent what they have discovered throughout the lesson. Students will get to interact with the teacher and their classmates during most of the class time. They will have opportunity to share their prior knowledge and experience at the beginning of the class, will be asked guiding questions during the direct instruction portion of the lesson, and will be able to share their findings or creation at the end of class. The science topics will be different each week and will flow with the "weird" holidays that correspond to the week within which the class is taught. The first section of this class, which will begin in August, will include the following classes: Feet - how different animals use their varied feet adaptations to serve their specific purposes (based on I love my feet day on August 17th) Ice Cream - The science behind how ice cream is made and why that works (based on Banana split day on August 25th) Wildlife - the needs of animals in the wild and how those needs are met in their environments (based on Wildlife Day on Sept. 4th) Ants- All about ants, their colony hierarchy, life cycle, and body structure (based on Ants on a Log Day on Sept. 18th) Peanuts and Play dough Creativity - what peanuts need to grow, their many uses, and being creative with play dough to demonstrate understanding of the peanut plant (based on a combination of Peanut Day, Live Creative Day, and Play Dough day on Sept. 13th, 14th, and 16th respectively) Dance - how bodies are able to move in so many different ways, and why movement, such as dancing, is a healthy thing for bodies (based on Dance Day on Sept. 19th) There is no prior knowledge necessary.
Learning Goals
Students will discover various science truths about their natural world based around silly holidays.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Geri, and I love teaching students of all ages, and facilitating learning so that it is meaningful and fun. My greatest educational passion focuses on the sciences and math. However, I also enjoy teaching and learning through history and the great literary works of the past and present.
I have been educating for the last ten years. I started out operating a free pre-k program out of my home for the children in my community who were not able to attend a designated learning institution. For two years, I was able to watch the children grow in the skills and knowledge they would need in order to be prepared for entering kindergarten. Soon after, I began educating my own children at home, and we are now in our tenth year of that journey. I have taught all the core subjects, including math, language arts, science, and social studies, as well as art, music, computer competence, physical education, and beginning Spanish as a second language.
I have also taught many subjects through our local home school co-op association to students of various ages, grades, and skill levels. Classes I have taught through this organization include: a pre-kindergarten program focusing on age appropriate themes, a high-school world history course, several elementary and middle grade science classes, elementary creative art, middle-school drawing techniques, high-school level art, history courses at the high-school level, upper-elementary introduction to the Spanish language, middle grade sign language, and an upper-elementary and middle grade creative writing course.
I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education through Western Governor's University, and have been awarded several Dean's awards for my work in the program, as well as been an active participant of the Kappa Delta Pi organization for exceptional teachers. I currently teach 1st grade at my local elementary school.
During this time, and before, I have cared for over 100 children in my home, and been approved by our state department to care for and adopt children.
I hold that every child has the potential and ability to succeed and learn what it is that they set their minds to learn. I know that communication about expectations, procedures, and the positive aspects of a child's performance is key to facilitating success for each child under my tutelage. I believe that students can and will meet expectations when they know they have the faith of those in the audience. I teach by setting realistic but challenging goals with the student, ensuring all procedures are understood and carried out, and having fun from start to finish.
I am a lover of learning, a doting mother, wife, and aunt, and a relaxed lady who lives with a bunch of animals. I currently have 4 goats, 18 chickens, 5 dogs, 3 hermit crabs, 2 guinea pigs, and a cat. I grow my own vegetables, which I love to pick and eat, when the chickens haven't already gotten to them. Lastly, I like to participate in kick boxing, yoga, and any form of dancing.
