Welcome to our Beginner French course! I'm so excited for you to join us on our journey to falling in love with the French language. Each week, we will learn about different elements of French culture through thematic topics. Naturally, for our first week, we will practice introducing ourselves and talking about where we come from! Each week, we will also have an opportunity to observe and discuss different Francophone countries and what makes them unique. Our classes will be filled with plenty of games, activities, and opportunities to practice the language in an authentic way - immersing ourselves in French and Francophone culture! Essential question: How can I describe myself and others confidently using simple sentences? Topics will include: Greetings and introductions - Discovering the foundations of the language while learning about one another Emotions - Expressing how we feel and identifying the emotions of others Friends and family - Describing our friends and family and observing families from different Francophone countries Colors, adjectives, numbers - Identifying and describing personal and physical characteristics Days of the week, the weather, and what we wear Food - Describing our food preferences/likes and dislikes and telling time Hobbies and sports - Discussing our hobbies and what we like to do in our free time While each class will be different in the specific topics, it will follow a similar structure: Warm up / review of key vocabulary (3 minutes) Presentation of topic through a video, slideshow, or short reading (5 minutes) Game or activity that incorporates topic (6 minutes) Brain break / song (2 minutes) Extension of topic through a video, slideshow, or short reading (5 minutes) Second game or speaking activity (6 minutes) Celebration of learning and review of material (3 minutes) Following proficiency-based standards of instruction, communication will be at the forefront of all of our lessons - maintaining a balance of interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication (i.e., reading, writing, and speaking). *ACTFL defines Novice Low as follows: "Speakers at the Novice Low sublevel have no real functional ability and, because of their pronunciation, may be unintelligible. At the Novice Low sublevel, listeners are able occasionally to recognize isolated words or very high-frequency phrases when those are strongly supported by context."
