Lesson 1
How to Use Watercolors
Students are introduced to the traditional art material, watercolor. A demo video is included that shows nine ways watercolor can be used in their visual journal. A reference guide is also included to help guide students as they work in their visual journals this week.
Students will develop an understanding of how to use watercolor in their visual journal through nine techniques. Students will create one page in their visual journal, but will complete the class with knowledge and techniques they can apply to future works of art.
I can't remember not having art in my life. I was raised by an art teacher, got my bachelor's and master's in art education, taught art-focused summer camps, volunteered in art classrooms, and taught high school art for over 12 years. Now I develop art lessons and curriculums for other teachers or homeschool parents to implement in their art classrooms. I love the flexibility virtual teaching offers me while still allowing me to be involved in education. Please reach out anytime with questions or comments!
Homework Offered
Once the demo videos and materials have been reviewed students have the opportunity to use the material and technique in their own visual journal that week.

-A used, hardback book
-Watercolor paint
-Water cups and water
-Paintbrushes
Optional materials students may want to use in addition to watercolors:
-Magazines that can be cut up
-Glue (Elmer’s glue or Mod Podge is best)
-Scissors
Students will control what the subject matter is in their own artwork and I don't show anything that could be upsetting or above a G rating. Students may need to use supplies such as scissors, supervision may be needed.
Nothing is required outside of Outschool to complete the assignment. However, it is helpful for students to be able to search for visual journal inspiration on Pinterest, YouTube, or similar.
