Class Experience

Smooth Gamers meets "Brawl Stars"!! Each week, we will feature different types of "brawlers" and learn their basic attack move. That way, I can ensure that we are getting all the Wake Your Brain moves in each week to meet our executive function goals. Then, the learners will get the change to free style for the brawlers' super attack. This is will give a lot of great freedom with their movement and their ideas, as well! Each week, we will open a special "box" to get a trophy brawler which we can use against all our brawlers in a "brawl." This will give us a built-in cypher each week! (p.s. A cypher is a breakdancing "battle" where dancers try out their best moves head-to-head. We will cypher as the brawlers!)

Each week, we will use new music to build our video game with movement (dancing and fitness movement) along with age-appropriate themes to:
-get our blood flowing to wake up our bodies and brains with hip-hop-inspired cardiovascular exercises. These skills also help with focus and organization.
-use cross-body movements to activate both sides of our brain. These skills help with flexibility of thought and learning integration.
-use self-pressure and coordinated movement for emotional regulation. These skills help with calming and self-control.
-practice and balance poses to improve coordination and creative thinking. These skills help with reading, too!
-learn breathing techniques that will help pull focus back in any situation.
-close with words of positive affirmation and visualization. These skills are important for the brain to feel good about learning!

This class can be used to prepare for learning, take a break between learning, or get your wiggles out and refocus.
As a physical therapist and dance educator, Ms Annika will lead the movements set to fun, age-appropriate music. No technique required! These movements use neuroscience to coordinate the hemispheres of the brain, increase blood flow, and improve concentration especially during on-line learning. This will be a fun, high-energy class!

This is an on-going class. While you may come and go as you please, our themes will keep rotating to practice the techniques in new and exciting ways every month! The more you practice, the better you Wake Your Brain!

Learning Goals
Students will learn movement techniques that empower them to take control of their learning, their emotions, and their attention.
The movements presented each week will center around focus training, attention to detail and cross-body integration, emotional regulation, patterns and mathematical thinking, lasting change through practice and success.
Additionally, learning goals include improved fine motor, gross motor, ocular-motor, and oral-motor strength, coordination, and endurance for improved handwriting, reading, attention, and articulation. Finally, the group choose-your-own-adventure nature of this course will also foster opportunities for team work, respectful disagreement, and good communication habits in a team.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Ms Annika is a physical therapist who specializes in adapting movement patterns to individual students' needs. With more and more on-line learning being utilized in education today, students can easily get distracted, minimizing the actual learning happening in front of a screen. This program uses neurologic principles in movement science to enhance learning-- especially digital learning.
