Did you know that when magma reaches the earth's surface it is known as lava? How about that there are more than 500 active volcanoes around the world? What about where was the largest hurricane of all time? Learn all these facts and more with this fun set of classes that explore different weather or natural events around the world. This is a course where children will be able to explore and grow in confidence in comprehension skills and discussion. We will explore the wild world of nature together from volcanoes to wildfires, from hurricanes to sink holes. We will explore amazing facts and share information. Children will read through passages and answer and discuss information - this lesson has cross curricular links between science and nature and reading comprehension skills. There will be some fun homework weekly too! Children, as well as learning about how amazing our planet is - will be increasing their confidence in answering the following types of questions as we go along: * Factual * Inferential * Primary / main idea * Structural Each week children will learn about different weather or natural phenomenons while discovering explore fun facts and engaging in discussion as listed below: Week 1 - 🔥🌋Volatile Volcanoes🌋🔥 Learn all about volcanoes, lava, magma, the ring of fire and famous volcanoes past and present. The exciting natural event of the volcanic eruption and the volcano itself have fascinated both adults and children for many thousands of years. Scorching melted rock originating from under the earth's crust forcing its way up through cracks in the earth's crust only to erupt causing chaos and fascination at the same time. The fury of the volcano can affect people far and wide for weeks to months to possibly years! This class explores a little history (Pompeii, La Palma), a little science (extrusive and intrusive rocks), a little English comprehension skills with a lot of fun and action. Join me as we discover famous volcanoes, lava, magma, ash, igneous rocks and plumes of ash cloud. Week 2 - 🌧 🌪Fierce Hurricanes 🌪🌧 and Terrible Tornados How fierce are hurricanes? What causes them? What is the difference between a hurricane and a cyclone? Fierce hurricanes and tornados have terrorized humans, animals and plants alike for millions of years. Destroying and uprooting everything in their path. This lesson will explore nature's most dangerous and destructive forces. As we journey together through this topic we will explore striking images and videos that offer a view of catastrophic weather conditions. Learners will be able to to see into the eye of a cyclone via video and photos. Hurricanes and tornadoes are not just wind, with them they bring torrential weather such as hailstones the size of tennis balls! They can turn a gentle stream into a raging surge within a few minutes. We will also discover how scientists learn the techniques developed through the centuries to forecast the weather and finally how human impact has affected the frequency and location of hurricanes through climate change. Week 3 - 🔥 Wild Wildfires 🔥 What causes a wildfire? The fire triangle and how wildfires spread and much more! Week 4 - 🌊 Terrible Tsunamis 🌊 What is a tsunami? Where do tsunamis occur? How to spot a tsunami and much more! Did you know that the tsunami is most common around the region of the planet known as the 'Ring of Fire'? Or that the most common cause of the tsunami is an underwater earthquake? We will also learn about how to spot the signs of tsunami and what do to if there is one! Come and join and learn all about these extreme natural events! Week 5 - Stinky Swamps and Other Wetlands Why are wetlands so important and so ignored? What kind of animals live in a wetland? Why should we save our wetlands? Week 6 - Climate Change Climate change is a long-term shift in the average weather patterns that have come to define Earth's local, regional and global climates. It's caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrialization, which release greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat and cause the planet to warm up, resulting in changes in weather patterns and the environment. This lesson will explore different aspects of climate change and what we can do to make a difference. Week 7 - 🌳 Looking after our environment. ♻️ How do we look after our environment? Why is it important? Can we make a difference? This week we will be exploring the important topic of looking after our environment. We'll delve into the ways in which we can care for our planet and why it's important to do so. We'll discuss the impact that our actions have on the environment and explore how we can all make a difference through small but meaningful changes in our daily lives.. Together, we'll learn about the different ways in which we can reduce waste, conserve resources, and protect our planet's delicate ecosystems. We'll also discuss why it's important to preserve our natural world for future generations and explore the consequences of not doing so. Thinking about water pollution and beach clean ups! Week 8 - Tornados How are they formed and how much destruction can he cause? Week of February 20th - no class ****** Week 9 - Earthquakes Where do they happen? What do they mean? What should you do if you are caught in an earthquake? Week 10 - Landslides Why are landslides so dangerous? What is a landslide? What causes them and what effect can they have?
