Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
This class is SUCCESSFUL at teaching young learners NEW vocabulary because it is:
*Engaging
*Participatory
*Active
*Addresses Different Learning Styles
*Is FUN!
When kids are engaged and having fun, they are learning without even knowing it!

Here is what some Outschool parents have to say about this class:
πŸ’¬"My daughter loves this class! She is able to set up her own grid on the paper to write all the words and some of the words challenge her. I love seeing how excited she gets when she knows the definition to a word! I really believe that this class is boosting my daughter's confidence and making her a better reader. "

πŸ’¬"This is a great class. The teacher is excellent at introducing the material, engaging the students, facilitating so that everyone gets a chance, making sure they all understand the material, and using various methodologies to keep them engaged. This is an ongoing class and we are loving it. "

Our effective teaching method, See-Say-Spell-Sketch for primary learners engages learners and activates their brains. My TEN learning modalities used when teaching each new word are listed below.

Learners will:
πŸ‘€ look at a visual representation of the word and discuss how that picture accurately represents the definition
πŸ’¬ verbally read each word aloud
✍ write each new word in notebook
πŸ”¨ break some words down into prefixes, suffixes, root words, and syllables
πŸ“š identify synonyms and antonyms of the word
🎯 make connections to the words and themselves and their experiences
πŸ‘“ identify critical attributes of each word
πŸ“ make up sentences using the words
🎨 draw a sketch to represent the words
🎬 act out some words

The interactive, structured format of the lessons help students build their vocabulary and retain their learning. My effective teaching method for primary learners called See-Say-Spell-Sketch (modeled after my intermediate teaching method called CARD: Connect-Apply-Repeat-Draw) engages learners rather than keeping them passive. Each new word will be presented on a Google Slide. The slides will help learners visualize these new words and will serve as discussion starters for the words. After we learn all 6 new words, we will play an interactive, digital game of Blooket to engage learners and help them master each word.

This multifaceted approach to explicit vocabulary instruction supports students in building a deep understanding of these new words.

Building a strong vocabulary is one of the KEYS to strong reading comprehension. It's difficult for students to understand a text if they don't know what the words mean, especially as they encounter non-fiction texts with content specific vocabulary. Research shows the more words students know, the better they can comprehend text. Many students need explicit vocabulary instruction to learn and master new vocabulary words and to connect those words to their prior knowledge.

⭐BONUS: After each class, I will post a link in the Outschool classroom for students to access the Blooket game we played during class so they can continue practicing with the words!⭐

Each learner will need to have a notebook or sheet of paper to record the words and drawings for the week.

Your child can join this class at any time. Learners will be challenged to use these new words in their conversation with others and will be asked to look for these words in the texts they are reading.

Here is a glimpse of the first 4 weeks of vocabulary:
Week 1: adjustable, edible, abandon, compromise, unusual, tidy
Week 2: gust, similar, sway, treasure, avoid, cause
Week 3: flock, vanish, suppose, separate, process, revise
Week 4: describe, detail, curious, enormous, famous, swoop

**Your learner will need to be able to open a separate tab on their computer to play the Blooket game. Or, they can access the game from a second device, like a phone or a tablet.**
