This class is a cohort for students ages 10-13 with 10th-12th grade reading levels. Reading, writing, & vocabulary using the Harkness method comprise this course. Ideal for students who are looking to be challenged academically. #academic

Please note that students older than 13 are not permitted in this course. The course is designed for late elementary and middle-grade students that want to be academically challenged in the area of literature but would rather not take classes with high schoolers and are perhaps not ready for some of the more mature content presented in high school. Students will also gain chances to make new friends and socialize! This class is ongoing, meaning that learners can leave or join each week....
Gifted students will be challenged in the area of reading, comprehension, inference, critical thinking, and vocabulary. Additionally, this class gives them agency over their own learning and allows them to communicate with other gifted students around their age.
I am a secondary English teacher with certifications in gifted education and special education. I have been professionally teaching for 7 years and have a masters of arts in English education. I have also taught several short story units, and enjoy using discussion-based learning to help students think deeply about the texts that they read.
Homework Offered
Reading assignments are required and necessary to complete in order to adequately participate in the discussion. Optional quizzes and vocabulary enrichment also available and posted each week.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

I select text or excerpts specifically to use with younger audiences that are still high in complexity. Some texts may have a spooky theme or reference murder/death (no gory details described). No profanity, vulgarity, etc. will be in any texts that I use.
The teacher will provide reading sources. Each source will be available in PDF format for easy accessibility.
