Engaging Vocabulary Building through Word Ladders: A Fun and Interactive Class!

Looking for a lively and educational drop-in class this fall and winter? Our word game, Word Ladders, delivers a double dose of fun and hidden learning!

Class Overview: In this interactive class, students build vocabulary and critical thinking skills by solving clues to move from one word to the next on a “word ladder.” We start with a base word, and students answer each clue to find the next step in the ladder—all the way to the top! At the end, students discover how the last word connects back to the beginning word.

Example Word Ladder: nickel-pickle-pick-pink-stink-sting-sing-sang-sane-same-dane-dime

How it Works:

1. We begin with a starting word and read the first clue aloud.
2. Each student submits their answer through the chat (or on a whiteboard for easy sharing).
3. I’ll select a student to share the answer aloud and read the next clue to keep the game moving!
4. Once we reach the top of the ladder, we’ll discuss the connection between the starting and ending words and explore sorting the words by parts of speech, rhymes, opposites, definitions, and more (as time allows).

    Familiarity with the chat feature is essential for sharing answers and participating.
    Alternatively, students may use a dry-erase board to write and share responses.

This class blends social play with rich vocabulary practice, making it a perfect fit for students with busy schedules.
