During this class students will learn Vivien Thomas. The person who invented the procedure to treat (Blue Baby Syndrome). A type of heart disease found primarily in infants. We will discuss Vivien's journey from his dreams of becoming a doctor to becoming a janitor to developing the procedure to treat Blue Baby Syndrome. I will guide the class through a question and answer period to be sure they they understand the journey and contributions that Vivien Thomas has made in our history. 1....
I have experience teaching sensitive topics and subject matters in community settings to various age groups. I will teach this class from an educational, cultural and historical view point.
Students should watch the movie "Something the Lord Made" (optional but helpful). If you opt to have the learner watch the movie, I suggest either parents watch it first or with the learner. The movie has nothing to do with religion but has negative racial components. A notebook and pen or pencil to write down questions they may want to ask in class. (optional)
Parents can watch the movie "Something the Lord Made" (with students to get an understanding of who Vivien Thomas was and what he contributed to modern medicine. The movie is age-appropriate.
