Class Experience

Join me as we tour the Egyptian Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5th Avenue in New York City. We begin our tour just south of the museum, outside Central Park, and proceed north. We then explore a number of galleries in this wing, looking at a few specific artifacts, including mummies, jewelry, hieroglyphics, statuettes, and of course, the Temple of Dendur, often considered a highlight.

After a brief tour both outside and inside the museum, we proceed to look at the history, founding principals, and mission of the museum, which was born of the ideals of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. We explore what the art world was like prior to this and why such cultural institutions became a necessary component of a modern society. (We journey across the pond to explore this a bit...looking at relevant places in both the UK and Egypt).

In addition to my own slides, we use numerous online tools, including but not limited to, educator guides, museum maps, museum websites, and virtual visits to various relevant locations throughout the world. Thus, students have the opportunity to directly engage with artifacts, maps, and similar primary resources, as we seek to explore the question, "What do we know about history and how do we know it?"

I absolutely love museums and always have. When I was in Nicaragua, I visited a small museum on the island of Ometepe and had to go find the curator to open it up for me. One of my only souvenirs from Nicaragua was a book I purchased at that museum. In Austria, Costa Rica, Scotland, Germany, Spain, and Ecuador, and wherever else I have gone, I am always finding myself at museums large and small, learning about the history and anthropology of the local people. But I always come home to the Met, one of my first, and one of my favorites. I go multiple times throughout the year, and have led visitors from around the world on tours of its many treasures.
