Class Experience

This class is a combination course that covers the anatomy of animals as well as common diseases, diagnosis, treatment, and the science behind how those diseases affect the body.

Each week we will cover a new topic (please see the syllabus for a full breakdown of the class schedule). I will run mini-reviews throughout class often so that any late-joining students won't miss any material!

I believe learning should be fun and that's ultimately how I teach! Breaking down big science ideas and medical concepts into bite-sized lessons that are easy for students to understand. There are colorful and detailed slideshows, videos of real-life patients, and walk-through diagnosing processes to keep the experience as close to a real internship as possible!

I do run an animal rehab organization here from the house as well. I will often bring animals to class for the students to see and ask questions about as well as show pictures and videos of past wild animals we've hosted such as newborn bunnies, fawns, and foxes!

By the end of class, students should be able to identify major diseases in a dog or cat, name the type of test they would need to run to confirm their diagnosis, and then offer 2 + 3 treatment options for that pet. Students will also leave with a general knowledge of the anatomy of a dog/cat including skeletal structure, major organs, and nervous system.

This class is not intended to treat or diagnose student's pets and is to be used for educational purposes only.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
During the dissection class we will watch a video of a human brain dissection. It's not graphic in nature, there is a little "pink" on the brain for the first 2 minutes, however, there is no body or true blood in the video. We will use YouTube in class to recreate interactions with real patients. (No animals appear sick or in pain.) This class is not to diagnose or treat animals at home and should be used for educational purposes only.
Supply List
Everything will be provided in class. Students may want to bring some sort of a setup for note-taking.
