Class Experience

The Urdu alphabet consists of 36 individual letters (often grouped in sets based on their shape). Each letter has at least 3 different shapes. Additionally, there's a separate set of heavy/aspirated letters making a total of 52 sounds to learn! With so many letters, and a script that goes from right to left, there is quite a bit to learn. But don't fear, this class will help you recognize letters and write with confidence. You will be ready to show off your skills at home, with extended family, social media, and the community!

Being a flex class, it is self-paced. When you complete watching videos, submit assignments, and respond to feedback, you will receive the next set of activities. To make the most of your time here, keep a steady pace so you don't fall behind. [if you are unable to complete the entire course, you will have an option to continue in another section at a discounted rate].

The class is also geared towards YOU and your ability. You will complete a google form upon beginning to gauge your level, submit a written piece, and a recording in a personal message in Outschool. From here you will receive your first week's lesson. While most interaction will be between teacher-student, you will have the opportunity to share your written pieces in the class page for others to comment on and learn from.

Class interaction: you will have a chance to go on scavenger hunts (GooseChase App), compete in quizzes, and play word-ladder games in the Outschool classroom. We will meet live at least twice in the course of the class to answer any questions.

For this class you will need a 3-ring binder divided into 3 sections:
1) reading: you will printout daily pages or select pages from the set
2) writing: you may print or copy from the screen to show your practice
3) grammar: as we learn the letters, grammar points will come up that will be included in the readings as well

Please have a highlighter, post-its (square and tabs), and colored pencils.

Week 1: Getting to know you
We will share about ourselves, gauge how much Urdu we know, and what we want to learn
We will go back and forth with any questions you have up front to clear up any confusion about the alphabet

Week 2: Full alphabet
Everyone will receive a video and activities on the full alphabet.

Week 3: two-letter words, short sentences

Week 4: vowels

Week 5: aspirated letters/ chashme he

Week 6: Differentiated learning begins up to Week 10
Based on your performance so far, you will continue the course with reading and writing material that challenges you at your level. You will continue to receive videos about each letter set to complete. You will receive a variety of reading based on your level (either limited to the workbook or you will be introduced to unique phonics books and poems).

Possible student-created written pieces (this is separate from copywork):
- card to family member
- family tree
- names in calligraphy
- poster for bedroom
- poster for home
- uplifting notes
- labeling: room, foods, colors
- note to friend or family
- paragraph about self
- invitation
- shopping list / menu
