Very few things make a students eyes glaze over like word problems in math classes! Even many confident mathematicians silently groan when they see word problems. Word problems in math require extra understanding, and many learners struggle with them because they understand the math but don't understand the language of math. In this class, we will approach word problems by following five simple steps. In these steps, learners will learn how to identify keywords that tell what kind of math to use. They'll also learn how to organize the information in a problem to figure out what the problem is asking for and how to use a picture to solve the problem. Finally, they'll learn how to use inverse operations and "does this make sense" to check their answer. This class is suited for upper elementary (Grades 3-5) and includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Learners will be most comfortable if they can multiply and divide comfortably. Please check out my Early Elementary Word Problems class for Grades 1-3 that is limited to addition and subtraction.

I'm an accountant with a teaching background who enjoys learning and strives to foster a love of learning in students through games and interactive learning. I believe students learn best when they are having fun and interacting with the material.
I have always had a passion for learning and have diverse interests. I'm especially passionate about building strong foundations in language and math. I believe confidence in these two areas will give students the tools to learn almost anything they'd like to in life.
As an accountant, I have expertise in mathematics and finance. I'm an Enrolled Agent and believe everyone should be proficient in budgeting and personal finance. I believe a strong foundation in math is important to develop advanced skills with numbers later in life. Likewise, strong grammar and language skills will help students communicate effectively and give them the tools to learn anything they'd like to. I'm also passionate about culture and language and have formally studied nine languages, including studying abroad. I want to share the world with students through language and exploration.
I hope to share my love of learning with each of my students as they explore their personal interests. In doing so, students will become lifelong learners and continue to grow in and out of the classroom.
