US Grade 4 - 6
Intermediate - Advanced Level
Do you have an avid reader at home? Joining a summer book club is a great way to encourage your child's love of reading and to build discussion habits, all while working on comprehension and vocabulary skills! In this course, we'll meet each week to discuss a section of a novel that students read outside of class. Students will make predictions, analyze characters, and discuss themes present in each novel. Students are welcome to join for Part 2 of a discussion if they missed Part 1, as long as they have read all the chapters (otherwise, they may hear spoilers)! Check out what we're reading this summer! 🥭 June 23: The Year I Flew Away (Part 1) 🥭 June 30: The Year I Flew Away (Part 2) 🎤 July 7: The First Rule of Punk (Part 1) 🎤 July 14: The First Rule of Punk (Part 2) 🌵 July 21: Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus (Part 1) 🌵 July 28: Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus (Part 2) 🇲🇽 August 4: Efren Divided (Part 1) 🇲🇽 August 11: Efren Divided (Part 2) Please note that students will need to read the chapters indicated *before* arriving to class. Additionally, please encourage your student not to read ahead, so that there are no accidental spoilers!
Learning Goals
Students will build positive discussion habits and reading comprehension skills by discussing characters, plot, setting, and themes with peers.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
I recognize that each family holds diverse beliefs and values. While all books are written for the target age range, I recommend using CommonSense as well as book summaries to determine if a novel is right for your family.
The novels we read cover topics including: diversity, belonging, immigration status, witchcraft, and disability.
All novels have lessons of empathy, respect, and understanding.
Pre-Requisites
Students should be avid readers - they can expect to read 120-170 pages per week.
Supply List
Students will need to acquire each novel - I encourage you to find it at your library or local bookstore, but all are available as audiobooks and in print on Amazon! Students will only need to locate the books for the weeks they wish to participate :) - The Year I Flew Away (Marie Arnold) - The First Rule of Punk (Celia C. Perez) - Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus (Dusti Bowling) - Efren Divided (Ernesto Cisneros) Additionally, we may use Gimkit or Blooket as part of our comprehension activities.
