Week 1- Where I Am From poems Week 2- Haikus Week 3- Found Poems/Blackout Poetry Week 4- Langston Hughes author study Week 5- 5 Senses Poems and Riddle Poems Week 6- Two-Sided Poems Week 7- Never Have I/Chance Poems (Roll-the-Dice Activity, too!) Week 8- Pop Music and Classical Poetry Week 9- Odes and Pantoums Week 10- Collaborative Poems Week 11- Sonnets Week 12- Robert Frost author study Each week, learners will be given poem templates for the specific poem form they are working on as well as in-depth instruction on the particular poem form. There will be plenty of opportunities for learners to work on their poems in class while receiving direct instruction and feedback from me. Whether or not learners are familiar with the poem forms above, this is the perfect time for them to delve deeper into their writing, be creative without fear of judgment, and create meaningful poems! There is no prior knowledge necessary for this course, nor any prior poem-writing experience. I specifically chose poem forms that are easy for learners to complete and that are FUN and ENGAGING! There will also be opportunities for learners to privately message the teacher for more help or guidance or to use the classroom chat function. This course will help learnrs build a foundation in reading and listening to poetry, write poetry, and develop deep writing skills. The purpose of the course is for teens to learn an appreciation for poetry and to also feel comfortable writing poetry of their own. I am very cognizant of the fear students may have sharing their poems and ideas, so I will always take that into consideration throughout this course.
Learning Goals
Learners will write poems based on the specific poem form taught each week and learn about famous poets.
