Class Experience

Take a dive with me into the ocean as we learn about four amazing sharks.

Sharks are really important for the ecosystem, but many people do not know much about them and hence are afraid of them.

Come along on this adventure to learn about how these four sharks feed, their diet, key features, and where you would find them in the ocean. During this 2-part course, we will learn about whale sharks, basking sharks, hammerhead sharks, and great white sharks. Both whale sharks and basking sharks are filter feeders, Great white sharks are apex predators in the ocean and hammerhead sharks use their head shape to successfully hunt their favourite food, stingrays!

After taking this course, students will gain an appreciation for sharks and understand why they are important.

The class will display images and videos to support students visually whilst we discuss key facts together and observations. Students will be provided with colouring pages to create their own picture book of each shark in different habitats within the ocean. During each lesson, students will participate in discussions with questions such as how can you identify a shark? What key features help great white sharks to be apex predators?

During lesson one, we will discuss why people are afraid of sharks and statistics to debunk myths of sharks hunting people. We will move on to learn about filter-feeders, how they feed, and what they eat. This lesson will focus on whale sharks and basking sharks, the largest fish in the ocean.

During the second lesson, students will discuss what is a predator and an apex predator. We will learn about sharks' key features and how you can identify a shark compared with other ocean animals such as whales. We will then focus on great white sharks and hammerhead sharks.

Students will be provided with printouts to complete and record information they have learnt in the class. They will also have the opportunity to draw each shark from the course.

Hello, it's lovely to meet you! I'm Catherine, a qualified primary teacher and home educator from the UK.

I am incredibly passionate about encouraging the next generation to be proactive with conservation and protecting our planet. You'll see many of my classes are themed around my love for animals, endangered species, habitats, and conservation.

Young students care deeply about our world, are enthusiastic and keen to learn about sustaining our planet. My classes are aimed mostly at 4-6 or 5-7-year-olds for this very reason.

As a qualified primary school teacher and ESL teacher, outside of my animal-themed classes, I also offer a range of fun, activity-led classes focused on phonics, book clubs, early math, and ESL.

Outside of teaching, I love nothing more than spending time in nature with my family. I have two children, 6 and 4, whom I home educate with my husband. We spend as much time as possible visiting nature reserves, local wildlife parks, and hiking with our dog. My DSLR camera is always on hand to capture the incredible sights we see, from migrating birds in winter to summer-blooming flowers.

Nature and the world around us is a huge part of our life. With my classes, I help young learners with a passion for our incredible world, by answering their questions, providing cross-curricular activities, and extending their prior knowledge.

My live lessons are often discussion-based within a relaxed and friendly environment where everyone has the opportunity to participate. Flex classes offer learners an opportunity to study the content at a pace or time zone that suits them. Due to them being no live lessons, these classes are jam-packed full of cross-curricular activities for students to enjoy and share with their peers.

Interested in finding out more?! GREAT!

Come along and join one of my classes below. I cannot wait to meet you.

Catherine
