Computers today are inherently complex! But the principles on which they operate are individually simple and comprehensible if looked at from a foundational perspective. This class gives you that perspective. Plus, this class will empower the student to manage their own computers with confidence. We will look deeply into primary three areas of performance, CPU, Memory, and Storage to understand how each affects performance. Learn not only how it works, but how to monitor computers and what changes can be make to improve performance! While the class is centered on Windows operating system, the principles here could be translated to any other OS (MAC, Linux, etc) This is an intermediate class, assuming a prior knowledge of the basic components and how they work. This can be achieved through the series offered "how does a computer work". This course is then the next level. Course layout: Week 1: CPU Use of Windows monitoring tools Speed Cores Time Slicing Sharing resources Wait states / run states Matching CPU to work patterns Week 2: Memory Use of windows monitoring tools RAM assignments Windows pagefile Swapping Memory management Week 3: Storage Use of Windows management tools Hard Drive Physics SSD Physics Read / Write speed Fragmentation and Defragmentation

Supply List
A windows computer is preferred, but MAC and Linux can be used with some translation. No special software is required, we use the built in management tools.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have spent my life in the tech industry, specifically matching hardware and software for a wide variety of applications. Through this life experience and training, I have achieved a unique and broad view of performance from a physical / logical / and virtual perspective. This basic understanding of WHY certain things just are, is missing in "how to" classes. I seek to help the next generation understand WHY things are so that they can be empowered to build the future.
