What's included

16 live meetings
10 hrs 40 mins in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. Each class, there will be some optional homework. Students who complete the homework will be more prepared for the next lesson, and will solidify their learning even more! I strongly encourage homework completion.
Assessment
The last homework assignment will serve as a "test." I will give parents/guardians the results of the test so they know which standards their student understood, and which standards need more practice.

Class Experience

US Grade 2
Over the 8 week course, every second grade Common Core math standard will be taught in a mini-lesson. There will also be time for ongoing review of standards we have already learned. Students will engage with each other and the teacher throughout the class.

The general structure of each class is as follows:
-Warm up activity (could be a review, a game, or a challenge problem)
-Mini-lesson on the day's focus standard
-Practice and review previous standards
-Closing

Each mini-lesson will have teacher-led instruction, group practice, independent practice, and a debrief. I will mostly use my camera to show myself and my big teaching whiteboard, but occasionally I will share my screen to show documents or slideshows. Students will be participating throughout the entire lesson, and I keep things moving somewhat fast paced to keep engagement high.

If students come to this class with mastery of certain concepts, but not others, that is totally ok! I am used to differentiating and will have various levels of problems for students to work on if they are ready for the next level. Also, if students are missing some ideas and understandings from previous math years, that is ok too, I can work to fill those gaps as I see them!

The prior knowledge needed is first grade math skills. At the end of the course, students will at least have a general understanding of the important second grade math concepts.

Here is a breakdown of what we will learn in each session:
1. Add and subtract within 20, skip counting by 5, 10, 100, and measuring lengths.
2. Break down numbers into hundreds, tens, ones, and review measuring and skip counting.
3. Represent numbers in expanded form and word form, compare numbers using symbols, compare cm to inches.
4. Add two digit numbers and estimate lengths.
5. Subtract two digit numbers, review adding two digit numbers, and add multiple two digit numbers.
6. Learn strategies to add/subtract 10 or 100 from any number, review adding and subtracting two digit numbers, estimate lengths.
7. Word problems with addition and subtraction, adding three digit numbers, measure to determine difference.
8. Word problems with addition and subtraction that include 2 steps, review of all measurement learned.
9. Subtracting three digit numbers, understanding a number line.
10. Review subtracting three digit numbers, learn about telling time on digital and analog clock, count and identify coins.
11. Review money and time, introduction to multiplication skills.
12. Review money and time, practice with multiplication concepts, arrays.
13. Time concepts (AM vs PM), graphs and line plots.
14. Review graphs and line plots, learn attributes of shapes.
