Class Experience

Who's ready to master the world's happiest instrument? I know I am and we are going to have a blast together!

Be aware that the first 2 sessions are more about getting acquainted with the instrument and then learning how to learn and practice. This course isn't as much about any specific skill as it is the foundational concepts of how to approach whatever skill you're wanting to learn and how to avoid bad habits and get the most out of your practice time. Please check out our other courses at OutschoolMusic.com for instruction on the worlds of strumming patterns or reading tabs or chord families or....anything! Here's what we'll cover in this course:

UKULELE 1 - Introduction to Ukulele
Week 1: Practice habits & Tuning
Week 2: Tracking progress & Letter Names
Week 3: Beginning technique
Week 4: Ukulele terms and parts

This asynchronous class is a perfect fit for learning music because each student can take their own unique amount of time to practice and master the material and still always have the assistance of the teacher through the classroom chat or video submission. Students have access to the instructor when the lesson is too confusing or boring.

Each lesson comes with homework assignments, a downloadable, printable slides of the material, and many lessons include a play-along downloadable MP3 audio track to practice with. Students will be able to choose from a range of assignments, including using the teacher's Flipgrid.com classroom to submit videos of themselves playing the assignments.

Students can also create interactive Kahoot.com review quizzes or play the ones provided by the teacher. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with other students on video submissions and jam together on the provided assignments, and can also participate in a final video mashup performance of the skills from the class.

Students will also be able to discuss their individual questions with the class and teacher during the mid-week office hours. For students who cannot make it to the office hours, they can submit their questions in advance and will be provided the links to the recordings. Mid-week announcements and assignments will be provided to supplement the prerecorded content, as each class has individual needs.

New videos are posted each week until all the course concepts are covered and each student has what they need to master the material!

A ukulele of some kind would be cool to have. But it doesn't have to be fancy. If it has 4 strings, there's probably a lot of progress we can make working with it! It's not what you play, it's how you play it :)

I could do lots of great work even on a little toy ukulele. At some point, you may want some accessories like picks or a tuner or a capo, and you don't have to know what any of those are yet because just you and your uke have a lot to learn about each other still :)

I have been teaching music to kids and adults for over 20 years, and it's the world's best job.

I primarily teach piano, guitars, drums, ukulele, banjo, bass, saxophone, and flute. Besides teaching music, I also spent many years as an elementary classroom teacher, and like to spend as much time as possible with my wife and six kids.

I believe that learning an instrument isn’t magic! Anyone can jump in and learn what they want. You CAN do at least some of it and you can’t mess it up. The music is here and it wants to be your friend.

Music is just a foreign language, so it can be as serious or as leisurely as you want. You can dedicate your life to the language or just learn a few words. The music is here to serve us, not the other way around. Most piano and guitar programs are insanely inaccessible, but my mission is to fix that with a specialized approach for every learning style. Jump in and explore. I’ll help show you around!

Let's explore. Let's learn. Let's rock!
