Class Experience

In Twisted Shapes: Drawing a Monster Using Geometry, learners will explore a variety of polygons by listening, watching, and creating. I will provide a printout before class begins and learners will spend the first class period filling in information about polygons and begin doodling to get ideas for our monsters. This printout will form a booklet that learners can use as notes. During the second week I will walk learners through the process of using all of the polygons to create their own unique monsters! We will study the following polygons: triangles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, and octagons.

Class 1: I will teach about polygons and their properties. For each polygon introduced students will do the following:
~ Trace its name
~ Practice drawing it freehand
~ Examine the edges, vertices, and diagonals
~ Doodle with the shapes to get ideas for our monsters

Class 2: Students will draw their monsters as I guide them through the process. This session will be nearly all drawing so it's the perfect opportunity for learners to use their creativity!

I specialize in finding fun twists to standard curriculum to help my students build critical thinking skills as well as mathematical skills. By adding a new twist to a familiar topic we can expand our thinking to include new possibilities. I have taught math to homeschool students for the last 15 years and during that time I have developed many teaching techniques and hands-on projects to help students explore concepts in new and exciting ways.
